About the Project حول المشروع

The Modern Art Iraq Archive (MAIA) project works to document Iraq’s rich but threatened modern artistic heritage. This project prototypes a participatory content-management system to trace, share and enable community enrichment around this art. MAIA houses images of works of art, many of them now lost, from the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad, as well as publications, exhibition catalogs, and personal documentation.

يعمل مشروع أرشيف العراق للفن الحديث (مايا) على توثيق التراث الفني الحديث في العراق الذي يتميز بغناه ولكنه مهدد بالضياع. يقدم هذا المشروع نموذج لنظام إدارة المحتوى مبني على المشاركة ويتيح إمكانية تتبع وتبادل المعلومات وإثراء حس المجتمع بهذا الفن. تحتوي "مايا" على صور للأعمال الفنية من المتحف العراقي للفن الحديث في بغداد، والتي يعتبر الكثير منها الآن في عداد المفقودين، فضلا عن المنشورات و كتالوجات المعارض و الوثائق الشخصية ذات العلاقة بهذه الأعمال.

MAIA's goals are to raise awareness of the diverse body of modern works of Iraqi art, to help locate their current whereabouts, and to assist agencies working to prevent their illegal movement and sale. MAIA aims to reach a wide and participatory audience across the globe, and offers users the ability to document, discuss, explore, and enrich Iraqi artistic expressions and experiences. Central to its development were ease of use, translation into Arabic, extensive and inclusive documentation, community contribution, and syndication of content elsewhere on the Web.

تهدف "مايا" الى رفع مستوى الوعي العام عن الكم الكثير و المتنوع من الأعمال الحديثة في الفن العراقي ، و للمساعدة في تحديد أماكن وجودهم الحالية ، ولمساعدة الهيئات التي تعمل من أجل منع الحركة غير المشروعة في هذه الأعمال وبيعها. تأمل "مايا" في الوصول إلى جمهور واسع ومشارك في جميع أنحاء العالم، وتوفر للمستخدمين القدرة على توثيق ومناقشة واستكشاف وإثراء التعبير الفني والتجارب الفنية العراقية. وكان من المبادئ الرئيسية وراء إنشاء هذا الموقع أن يكون سهل الاستخدام، والترجمة الى العربية حيثما أمكن، وأن يكون التوثيق واسع وشامل، وإتاحة الفرصة لمساهمة المجتمع، ونشر المحتوى في أماكن أخرى على شبكة الإنترنت.

MAIA launched in February 2011 with an initial body of content representing over 700 artistic works and documents. This is just a beginning; the archive will never be "complete." On the contrary, MAIA will grow and change over time as people worldwide contribute information about the works, as new works are added, and as the works are linked to other content on the Web.

أطلقت "مايا" في فبراير من عام 2011 بمحتوى أولي يمثل أكثر من 700 عمل فني ووثيقه. إن هذه هي مجرد بداية و الأرشيف لا يمكن أبدا أن "يكتمل" بل على العكس من ذلك فإن "مايا" سوف تنمو وتتغير مع مرور الوقت حيث أن الناس في جميع أنحاء العالم سيساهمون بالمعلومات حول الأعمال ، كما أنه سيتم إضافة أعمال جديدة و ربط الأعمال التي يحتويها الموقع مع غيرها من المحتويات على شبكة الانترنت.

MAIA aims to gather and build on the hard work of many people who have been collecting archives of modern Iraqi art. Much of the text included here was generously contributed to MAIA by the artist Dia Azzawi. MAIA invites you to add to our open and growing resource by contributing your data or allowing us to link to it.

The MAIA project represents a collaborative effort of scholars from the University of North Texas, the Alexandria Archive Institute, and the UC Berkeley School of Information. The system was built in 2010 with a Digital Humanities Start-Up grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and using open source software developed by Omeka.

يمتل مشروع "مايا" جهدا تعاونيا بين مجموعة من العلماء من جامعة شمال تكساس و معهد أرشيف الإسكندرية و كلية الإعلام في جامعة كاليفورنيا في بيركلي. وقد تم بناء النظام في عام 2010 مع منحة لتطوير العلوم الإنسانية الرقمية من المؤسسة الوطنية للعلوم الإنسانية وباستخدام برمجيات المصدر المفتوح التي وضعتها "أوميكا".

The MAIA project is a non-commercial, non-profit effort that does not sell any of the works in the archive or share them for any commercial purpose, including advertisement.

Project Team فريق المشروع

• Nada Shabout (Project Director) is an Associate Professor of Art History and the Director of the Contemporary Arab and Muslim Studies Institute (CAMCSI) at the University of North Texas. She is the author of Modern Arab Art: Formation of Arab Aesthetics, University of Florida Press, 2007 and co-editor of New Vision: Arab Art in the 21st Century, Thames & Hudson, 2009. She has curated several exhibitions of Arab and Iraqi art and has written extensively on Iraqi art. Since 2003, she has been working on the recovery, documentation and digitization of modern Iraqi heritage, particularly the collection previously held at the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art.

  ندى الشبوط (المدير العام للمشروع) هي أستاذة تاريخ الفن ومديرة معهد الدراسات العربية والإسلامية (كامسي) في جامعة شمال تكساس. وهي مؤلفة كتاب "الفن العربي الحديث: تشكيل الجماليات العربية"، مطبعة جامعة فلوريدا عام 2007 ؛ و هي أيضا المحرر المشارك لكتاب "رؤية جديدة: الفن العربي في القرن الواحد والعشرون" ، تيمز و هدسون عام 2009. وقد قامت بتنظيم العديد من المعارض عن الفن العربي والعراقي وكتبت على نطاق واسع عن الفن العراقي. عملت د. ندى الشبوط منذ عام 2003 على استعادة و توثيق و رقمنة التراث العراقي الحديث، وبخاصة الأعمال الفنية التي كانت سابقا في حوزة المتحف العراقي للفن الحديث.

• Saleem Al-Bahloly (Researcher) is a graduate student in the Anthropology Department at UC Berkeley. He has been the lead compiler and digitizer of text.

• Ahmed Khalil (Project Translator) is an architect. He has been the lead translator and editor for MAIA.

• Tiffany Floyd (Researcher), a graduate student at the University of North Texas in the Art History MA program, assisted with data entry and description writing for MAIA items.

• Sarah Whitcher Kansa (Project Manager) is Executive Director of the Alexandria Archive Institute (AAI), a non-profit organization based in San Francisco, CA. Her involvement with the MAIA project works towards the AAI's mission to facilitate open access to global heritage.

• Francis Debaluwe (Dissemination Coordinator) leads publicity and community-building efforts through blogging, and monitors public use of the MAIA site. He was Director of the Iraq War & Archaeology project, which gathered and assessed information on the state of the archaeological heritage of Iraq in the aftermath of the 2003 invasion by the US and allies. In this context, he frequently interacted with the media and published extensively both in specialized and lay venues.

• Mohit Gupta (Omeka Developer) was a graduate student at the School of Information at UC Berkeley when he participated on this project.

• Eric Kansa (Technology Consultant) is the lead developer for Open Context and provides technical guidance and advice for this project.

MAIA has made all reasonable attempts to ensure that the content on this site does not infringe on anyone's copyright or other intellectual property rights. The MAIA project is posting these works to meet three specific aims:

• Educate the public about Iraq’s modern artistic heritage and the impacts of war and continued political instability.
• Collect photographic and documentary evidence of interest to scholars investigating the arts, politics, and culture of modern Iraq.
• Help international law enforcement officials identify potentially stolen works of art.

Many of the works shown in MAIA are now lost, and it is our goal to document and help recover these works, if possible. To help maximize exposure of these works, MAIA uses a Creative Commons copyright license. The specific license that applies to each and every work is the Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-Share-Alike 3.0 license.

الجدير بالذكر أن الكثير من الأعمال المعروضة في “مايا” هي الأن في عداد المفقودات و إن هدفنا هو توثيق هذه الأعمال والمساعدة على استعادتها كلما كان ذلك ممكنا. للمساعدة على تحقيق أقصى قدر من التوعية بهذه الأعمال فإن "مايا" تستخدم رخصة حق التأليف الإبداعي المشترك. و بالتحديد فإن الترخيص القانوني الذي ينطبق على كل عمل هو المشمول تحت Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-Share-Alike’ 3.0 license للاستعمالات غير التجارية و المشاركة بالمثل.

This license means that others are allowed to copy and share the materials for non-commercial use (e.g. educational use, on their blogs, on social networking sites etc) as long as they attribute the artist and MAIA. It also means that people are allowed to make derivatives of the work. Example derivatives can include translations of the original text, an editorial revision, annotation etc, as long as it doesn’t violate the moral rights of the artist or author. The ‘share-alike’ clause means that all derivatives of the work must be made available under the same terms of the original. We chose this license as a tool to help achieve our goals of publicizing and recovering Iraq’s lost artistic heritage without damaging the interests of artists. The license prohibits commercial uses of works in MAIA but allows these works to be reproduced and further documented in other public forums for non-commercial purposes, including: education, research, journalism, and law-enforcement.

تم إنشاء أرشيف العراق للفن الحديث (مايا) بمنحة لتطوير العلوم الإنسانية الرقمية من المؤسسة الوطنية للعلوم الإنسانية في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. قام الفنان ضياء العزاوي مشكورا بتصميم أعمال فنية خصيصا لموقع "مايا" الإلكتروني. وقدم قام بتقديم مساعدات إضافية لإعداد وتوثيق محتويات "مايا" كل من: مريم حلمي، أليس سمبتيان، إرين جويس و مهند الناصري وساهمت الفنانة سندس عبد الهادي بوثائق مهمة.
