Shackled man with flag and panther

In the foreground of this emotive painting, by Mahoud Ahmad, a shackled wraith-like man weeps cradling a shovel. Just below him a black panther snarls with a claw raised to an American flag. In another vignette, a man sits smoking against a sandy backdrop, a woman’s figure composing the form of the pipe. To the left, a stele is being heaved out of the frame; while at the furthermost right corner of the composition, a lit lantern obscures three faces in profile.
